Frequently asked questions
Am I saving money by buying the pack?
No, and we would rather say so plainly. At ₹1,400 the Oota Trio is priced at exactly what the three bottles cost bought separately — ₹360 for the 1 L groundnut, ₹520 for the 1 L coconut and ₹520 for the 1 L sesame. What it saves you is the choosing and the second order, not rupees. If you only need one or two of the three, buy those on their own; you will not pay more per bottle for them.
Which of the three do I use for what?
Groundnut is the everyday frying and seasoning oil — high in monounsaturated fat, so it holds up in a kadai for vadas, bondas and pakoras. Coconut is the most heat-stable oil in the house and the one coastal Karnataka cooking is built on: fish fry, gassi tempering, a wipe on the tava. Sesame is a flavouring oil used in small amounts, not a frying oil — ogarane, saaru, pickles and chutney podi. Which oil for which job sets out the whole range, and where ellenne belongs covers the third bottle in detail.
Will 1 L of each be enough, and how long will they keep?
In a household of three or four cooking most meals at home, the groundnut usually goes first because it is doing the frying, the coconut next, and the sesame lasts longest — a litre of it is a lot of tempering. Finish each within three to six months of opening, kept capped in a cool, dark cupboard away from the stove. If you find you are reordering groundnut on its own every month, the 5 L works out better per litre than a second combo. Our storage guide explains why unrefined oil is perishable.
